How to Interview Software QA Tester

Hiring good Software QA Testers is hard because excellent testing is dependent on much more than just knowledge of software testing methodology and testing tools. I would like to share job interview tips which may help QA Manager to hire a great professional.

What is your area of expertise?

You should look for general testing talent ability, instead of searching software testers with particular skills like five years of manual testing, three years Microsoft SQL Server, programming experience in Java, two years Android testing and two years Selenium RC. The company changes and tomorrow you would need QA Testers with Oracle and HP QTP skills, so instead of firing and rehiring you need to hire testers who are innovative in the present and can adapt better in the future. To recognize excellent Quality Assurance Engineers, let them select an area in which they feel they have expertise and ask why something in their area of expertise performs the way it does. If they figured out why in the past, you will have assurance they will learn why in the future.

Ask to critique something

You have to engage QA Tester in the conversation. It means that instead of asking common testing interview questions like What is black box testing?, you have to create a dialog with interviewee. To create dialog, you can ask QA Tester to critique something. For example, if QA Tester has Selenium experience, I may ask, "What features of Selenium do not you like and why"?. You could give QA Testers samples of test cases and ask them to critique it.

Ask to solve testing puzzle or problem

If you still want to engage the candidates in conversation ask them to solve a problem. I hate asking popular brain teasers during QA interview. A brain teaser or puzzle interview question usually requires knowing a trick, which is in essence something that is either known or unknown. I dislike brain teasers, because they don't require dialog. I prefer to ask the candidate about approach to testing a toaster or ATM machine. This eliminates any problems with uncertainties about the knowledge domain, because everyone knows what a toaster or ATM machine is. It checks to see if they are capable of thinking out of the box during testing.

Look at test plan or test cases

Ask Quality Assurance Engineer to bring a sample test plan or sample test case to the interview. Look at the candidate’s test cases or test plan and talk with them about documentation. Perhaps some QA Testers could not legally bring test documentation to the interview, but most software testers will probably come up with something.

What best Quality Assurance books could you recommend?

I often ask interviewee about best software testing books they may recommend or recently read to check if a tester is eager to improve their own testing skills and can educate themselves of their own volition.

Ask about people skills

The personality is more important then technical skills. If you hire people who lack personal skills, it can be extremely difficult to get them to cooperate in reaching a goal, no matter how bright they are or what they've accomplished in the past. One of the techniques to judge personality is ask the candidates about problems they had with QA manager, test engineers, software developers or customers and how they dealt with these problems.


As hiring QA Manager, you should hunt for talent and personality more than specific technical skills. Engage in productive conversation and revealing dialog by asking QA Engineer open-ended questions. Ask QA Tester to critique familiar technology or testing approach. Examine candidates test plan and test cases during interview. Lastly offer the selected candidate the adequate QA Engineer salary and benefits.
